To Donate Eggs

Since egg donation is considered "tissue donation" by the FDA, there are strong guidelines that need to be met to provide a safe transfer of "tissue" from one person to another.  Additionally, ASRM (American Society for Reproductive Medicine) is the self-governing body of reproductive services in the USA.  They also have some strong recommendations / guidelines their members are expected to follow.

Egg Donation Process Types of Agencies

  1. Internet Agency = IA

  2. Egg Donation Agency = EGG

  3. Internal Agency at the Fertility Center (Dr's Office) = DR

Regardless of the type of agency you start with, you will likely go through all or most of these steps to become an egg donor.  Typically, the steps usually take three possible paths.  They include the Internet Agency (IA)and the Doctor's Office (DR), the Egg Donation Agency (EGG) and the Doctor's Office (DR), or just the Doctor's Office (DR).  At some point there is a "hand-off" to the doctor's office.  There are advantages and disadvantages to all services.  Find out which one is best for you.  About each step:

Who Does What?
(generally)

  1. Pre-Screen Application - The entire application requires significant time and research to complete.  The Pre-Screen Application is a small subset of the entire application.  These simple questions provide insight to determine if it is in the best interest of both parties to invest the required time and research to complete the overall application based on meeting the program requirements.

IA, EGG, or DR

  1. Overall Application - This is a comprehensive evaluation of the donor's health, physical characteristics, social behaviors, education, family health, photos and essays, designed to help get to know the donor as well as determine continued eligibility.  Additionally, there are sections related to obstetric, gynecologic and sexual histories.  Since these questions can be very personal, often they are saved until there is an established working relationship.  As an Internet agency, our Pre-Screen includes many of these personal questions to save overall time, but we don't gather name and contact information until after the Pre-Screen is approved.  Regardless, the touchy questions are unavoidable.

IA, EGG, or DR

  1. Selection - This step is 3rd for Internet agencies, but likely later for egg donation agencies and fertility centers.  Some organizations only show "qualified" donors, whom have already been through the processes.  This is one reason why experienced donors provide more value.  Others show "available" donors whom are interested in moving through the processes.

IA, EGG, or DR

  1. Background Check - Some organizations routinely run background checks prior to declaring an official selection.  Our Internet agency leaves that decision up to the Recipient, but it may be required at the fertility center anyway.  A background check will provide insight into the criminal history, aliases, different addresses, verification of information, etc., all to determine whether the donor is a mature, reliable person for this treatment.

IA, EGG, or DR

  1. Personal Interview - A donor can expect a face-to-face or phone interview to help the donor understand the process and to help the egg donation agency or fertility center better understand the donor and donor's answers.

EGG, or DR

  1. Psychological Testing - Sometimes this is done at the egg donation agency, sometimes it is done at the fertility center, sometimes it is not done at all.  Even with everything else looking positive, it is important to determine if a donor has the mental strength and comprehensive understanding of the situation to complete a donor cycle.

EGG, or DR

  1. Contracts - The actual location of this step varies all over the board.  Regardless, prior to any treatment there will be contracts created to ensure that all parties are in agreement to each other's roles, responsibilities and commitments (financial and otherwise).

EGG, or DR

  1. Physical & Lab Testing - At the fertility center, a summary of all the above, combined with a physical examination and genetic lab testing, will ultimately determine final eligibility.

DR

  1. Treatment - Under the guidance of the fertility center, the donor will undergo treatment to stimulate egg development, monitor egg development and aspirate eggs for ultimate fertilization and transfer to the recipient.
